ER: The Black Hole - Not friendly and sucks away your money for nothing

Note: Post may contain ranting.

So last night, Adam and I had an interesting experience. Adam goes to play church basketball every Wednesday night and yesterday was his last time going. Normally I am asleep by the time he gets home, but this time I wasn't. When he got home, he was of course very sweaty, but was also bleeding from his eyelid. Apparently, he was elbowed in the eye by some big guy that was playing with them and it split his eyelid open. Adam hadn't noticed until I pointed it out. As much as Adam has been waiting for the day he can put his own stitches in, to me relief, he decided his eye wasn't the best place to try it out. Urgent care had been closed for sometime by this point. Normally, Adam would suck it up and go to sleep saying it is fine, but he was a little more worried about this one because the wound wasn't closing very well, it is not easy to bandage, and he most definitely didn't want an infection in his eye. So, we cleaned it with alcohol and went to the emergency room.

Fortunately, there seemed to be a relatively small number of people there that night. Unfortunately, there also only seemed to be one doctor. The lady at the front desk said he would probably need stitches, after she sat and stared at us for a bit wondering what we wanted. (We are in the ER, what do you think we want!) We got into an exam room quickly, but then had to sit there for about 2-2.5 hours. When the doctor finally came, he said they don't do stitches or bonding on the eye, so he prescribed some antibiotic ointment (also known as neosporin) and antibiotic pills to help fight infection (which Adam already has). Don't trust ladies at front desks, they lie to steal your money. If they are going to steal your money they should at least do it with a smile. This lady looked like she was playing poker every time we saw her.

All in all, we payed over $100 for Adam to be handed a piece of gauze with saline solution on it to clean his wound himself and two prescriptions for medications we didn't need. No bandages or anything. Now Adam has to figure out a way to keep the wound clean and covered up because every time he closes his eye the wound opens up again. Oh and we got home at about 2am. I am pretty sure this was the biggest waste of both time and money we have ever experienced. I have a feeling Adam will have no desire to go to the emergency room again unless it is life threatening. It was actually a good thing he was so tired when we got home, or he might have had a rough time getting to sleep with how ticked off he was about the whole experience. C'est la vie!

  1. I cannot TELL you how many times we have had that same experience! Except Talon's injuries normally require about 4 hours of waiting in the ER. All for a few pain meds or something equally basic. Ugh! I feel your pain.
